A yak chew is a very hard, slow-dried cheese chew based on churpi (also spelled chhurpi), a traditional Himalayan food. The classic recipe is short: yak and/or cow milk, a squeeze of lime juice to separate the curds, and a pinch of salt. The curds are pressed and then dried or smoked for weeks until they become extremely firm.

They can suit some healthy adult dogs, but no very hard chew is risk-free. The hardness that makes them long-lasting can also contribute to tooth fractures, and any chew becomes a choking hazard once it is small enough to swallow. Size correctly, supervise every session, remove the end piece, and ask your veterinarian if your dog has dental issues or an unusually forceful bite.

Be conservative. Puppies have developing teeth and jaws, so a rock-hard bar is usually a poor match. Many owners wait until adult teeth are fully established and ask their vet first. Puffed churpi products are often a gentler introduction to the flavor without the hardness.

It depends on the chew’s density and your dog’s jaw strength and style. Expect anywhere from days to weeks of supervised sessions. There is no honest universal number, so replace the chew based on its condition and size, not a promised duration.

Take it away before it can fit fully in your dog’s mouth. If the manufacturer allows it, soak the piece in warm water, microwave it briefly until it puffs into a crunchy cracker, and let it cool completely before serving. If puffing isn’t authorized for that product, discard the end safely.

Far less than most animal-tissue chews. Dry churpi has a mild, smoky-dairy scent that most owners barely notice. That’s one reason it’s popular with people who can’t stand bully-stick odor indoors.

No blanket claim is honest here. Slow drying reduces lactose, but reduced is not zero, and the milk proteins that trigger true dairy allergies remain. If your dog has a known dairy sensitivity or is on an elimination diet, talk to your vet before offering any cheese chew.

Different tools. Yak chews last longer, smell less and are leaner; bully sticks are softer on teeth but higher in calories, smellier and finish faster. Dogs with dental concerns generally do better with softer options. When in doubt, ask your vet which category fits your dog’s teeth.

Many owners switch for exactly that reason. A yak chew is dried cheese with a three-ingredient label, not processed hide, and a properly sized bar usually outlasts a rawhide roll. The same safety rules still apply: size correctly, supervise every session, and take the chew away once it wears small.

Churpi is energy-dense: a typical 4 oz (about 115 g) bar carries roughly 300 kcal. The saving grace is that it is eaten slowly across many sessions rather than in one sitting. Count the chew inside the usual ceiling of about 10% of daily calories from treats, and ask the maker for exact numbers when the label omits them.

Yes. Churpi is a milk product: yak and cow milk, lime juice and salt, with no meat, hide or animal tissue.
